GIRL CHILD EDUCATION FACES CHALLENGES IN MCHINJI DISTRICT

As government and other stakeholders are working hand in hand in promoting girl child education in the country, Mchinji district still faces some challenges.
This has been established during a media tour which was organized by Community Initiative for Social Empowerment(CISE).
During the visit at Mlonyeni Primary School, it shows most of parents are not willing to send back teen mothers to school with an impression they may get pregnant again once enrolled at school.
Chairlady for Mother Group at the school, Matilda Nyirenda said despite working hard to ensure girls attain quality education, dropouts are rampant around Mlonyeni area due to their Ngoni cultural beliefs.
Nyirenda said village Leaders do help a lot in making bi-laws, but most of the times enforcement is the challenge.
She narrated that most of the girls go back to their marriages due to lack of support when they go back to school as some of them have no one to take care of their children at home.
Furthermore, she commended Cise for good work as they empowered them with trainings and bringing role models to talk to the girls at school.
Commenting on the issue Cise Executive Director, Andrew Mwanza said they are working around the clock in collaboration with District Education Office to make sure every girl remains in school and attain quality education.
Mwanza said they are empowering mother groups and school committee with skills to help in ensuring that every girl stays to school.
